GROVE GALLERY AT THE UNDERLINE

Located within The Underline, Miami’s 10-mile linear public park, this outdoor library and plaza demonstrates a design approach grounded in accessibility, flexibility, and civic engagement.

The library is conceived as an open, highly legible public amenity that integrates seamlessly into daily city life while serving as a recognizable civic landmark. A series of modular, multi-functional totems structure the space, combining book storage, seating, and interactive elements into a unified system that supports users of varying ages and abilities. Books are distributed at multiple heights to increase physical accessibility and encourage intuitive interaction, rethinking the traditional library model as an open, participatory experience that evolves with the collection and its visitors.

Integrated lighting within the totems enhances visibility, wayfinding, and safety after dark, extending the usability of the space and reinforcing its role as a dependable civic resource.
